Profile Management

Introduction.

Scense Live Profiles is a real-time approach to user-profile virtualization.

Live Profiles focuses on:

  • Short logon times

With conventional roaming profiles the user will have to wait for the entire user profile to arrive from the server before the desktop and the applications become available.
Live Profiles will release the desktop immediately after the most important settings are applied. After releasing the desktop Live Profiles will continue synchronizing files and settings.

  • Consistent user experience

The real-time characteristics of Live Profiles will ensure a consistent user experience throughout the session, even when the session extends over multiple workstations or terminal servers. Windows- and Application settings changes are synchronized in real time to the central Profile Store, and all workspaces the user has (concurrently) logged on to.

  • Low maintenance

Scense Live Profiles comes with preset default filters for both the Windows settings and the application settings.
This means the administrator can start using Live Profiles immediately without complex configuration.
Live Profiles can be enabled for applications individually. This means the administrator will determine which applications will have their settings handled by Live Profiles and which not.
Live Profiles will ‘learn’ about your applications automatically without the administrator having to define any registry- or file locations for the application.

Using Scense Live Profiles.

After installing the Scense Live Profiles client software, Live Profiles will be activated by the standard Scense pre-logon sequence.
This sequence is controlled by the ‘AutomaticUserSettingsCycle’ site parameter.
This parameter should be set to ‘1’ in order to invoke the ‘user settings cycle’.
After setting this parameter the cycle will be started on each computer by the Scense OnDemand service. This means that it will most probably take at least one extra logon to actually start Live Profiles.

After being started the Live Profiles Client will communicate with the Live Profiles service, retrieve configuration settings (filters) and it will start managing the parts of the user profile that are covered by Live Profiles.
If Live Profiles is enabled for applications, then the application settings will automatically be handled for those applications, without administrator- or user intervention.

Supported Platforms.

Scense Live Profiles will run on, and support cross-platform transactions for:
