Scense 7

Released in March 2010

The main focus of this release is on the support of Windows 7 and 64 bits Microsoft Windows desktop environments. This release also introduces a new rich, modern and extremely intuitive user interface helping to further simplify user workspace management within MS Windows desktop environments. All new features are discussed below.

Windows 7 support

Scense 7.0 support Windows 7 desktop environments. Windows 7 desktops are managed and applications are delivered independent of the Windows version and the level of User Account Control (UAC).

Support 32 and 64 bit architectures

Scense 7.0 also fully supports the 64 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. (check upgrade notes for support oracle database in 64 bit Windows environments.

Windows 7 theme

We changed the look and feel of the user interface of the Scense components to guarantee a consistent look and feel within Windows 7 desktop environments. The Scense interface fully supports the Aero Glass interface but will also look great within a classic Windows interface.

Ribbon Interface

While there is a whole lot more to Scense 7's new UI, the first thing you will notice is that all of Scense's menus and toolbars have been replaced with a single container that organizes Scense's full feature set into a series of tabs. This container is known as the "Ribbon".

Scense implemented the ribbon interface within Scense Explorer. This rich and modern user interface will improve the user experience to the administrator by offering a more intuitive interface. The interface is context aware and the functionality the administrator needs is available in one mouse click just when he needs it.

Easy Delivery FTA support

Scense Easy Delivery will retrieve file type association information from the Windows Installer package, SWV layer or App-V sequence automatically and bring it within the span of control of the IT administrator. The administrator will be able to manage, add or delete file type associations within the Scense explorer resulting in a consistent user experience to the end user.

Implement easy App-V connection configuration

Using Scense to manage App-V applications and the App-V server components has become even easier. The App-V connection data is configured automatically during the Scense setup.

Support the App-V application type with the Scense Package Wizard

To increase scalability and manageability of large desktop environment and App-V , Scense implemented functionality to export and import App-V packages.

SWV 6.1 Support

Scense fully supports and integrates with Symantec Workspace Virtualization version 6.1.  SWV 6.1 has many new features like Layer isolation and visibility or dependencies between layers. Scense 7.0 will add manageability and scalability to SWV like it has been doing  for years.

App-V 4.6 Support

Scense 7 fully supports and integrates with the latest version of Microsoft App-V.

Upgrade notes

When planning for an upgrade to this release of Scense, please read the notes below. They might have an impact on your project.

  • Scense 7 is backward compatible with Scense 5.5 and Scense 6.1. This means Scense 5.5 and 6.1 clients can communicate with the Scense 7 server components.
  • Upgrading from a previous version will require the client software to temporarily run from local cache. Scense advises to keep this period as short as possible.
  • Upgrading will require database modifications, so Scense advises to backup the database before upgrading.
  • To enjoy the full functionality of Scense Explorer, .Net Framework 3.5 should be installed on the desktop running Scense Explorer.
  • Customers using an Oracle database as Scense database will not be able to run Scense Explorer on a 64 bits Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows XP desktop nor will they be able to run the Scense server components on a 64 bits Windows server OS.

Shortcut and FTA conversion

Scense 7 is capable of running in a mixed environment of 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

To make sure applications will run seamlessly on both platforms it is necessary to convert the shortcuts and file type associations (FTA’s) in the Scense database.

This conversion, however, is not compatible with Scense Clients from previous versions, which means the conversion should be postponed until all workstations and terminal servers have been upgraded to the new Scense Client version.

Newly created shortcuts and file type associations will have the new format which is compatible with Scense 7 and up.

It is recommended to upgrade all Scense Clients before creating or modifying shortcuts or FTA’s.

In order to convert the shortcuts and FTA’s just run ‘ScenseShortcutFTA3264.exe’ from the ‘Conversion’ folder on the Scense 7 CD or ISO.

Make sure you run it on a workstation where Scense Explorer is installed.
